Storyline
“Amsterdam 2022” In this movie, it’s tempting to say that I love David O. Russell’s new film, “Amsterdam,” is a hoot and half a mile. And would have worked with it. But there is much more that happens in this exuberant film, in substance and style. It is a historical fantasy. And which is written and acted like a comedic long story. But it is even more remarkable for its solid basis in reality. And it also finds its place in recent, strange but important sub-genre films. Which emerge in response to the authoritarian and hate-filled actions and rhetoric of the Trump era. It would have been easy to scoff at the very notion of overly selective crowd-pleasing. Wherein many of these films, including “Amsterdam”, were among the most emotionally committed and aesthetically distinctive films of the time. In “Amsterdam”, Russell encounters a so-called real-life business plot. and takes place during the early days of Franklin Roosevelt’s first administration. A group of officials tried to take advantage of the anger of veterans who had not received their fair share of benefits under their predecessor, Herbert Hoover. and so that an advisor-cum-dictator could be installed as General Smedley. In “Amsterdam”, Russell Rosencrantz and Guildenstern focus the plot on a fictional trio with a higher purpose. The one who stumbles upon that plot. And then tries to thwart it.
