Storyline
“The Amazing Maurice”, an animated comedy produced by Sky Cinema, brings to screen the first children’s book in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series of fantasy novels. It happens to be led by the smooth-talking Hugh Laurie and boasts an impressive ensemble cast including Emilia Clarke, Himesh Patel, Hugh Bonneville, and David Thewlis, among other household names from English screen heritage. Following Pratchett’s original departure from the Pied Piper folk tale, The Amazing Maurice follows Maurice on his grand tour of Discworld. In this, cities are cheated with handfuls of cash in an elaborate scam. This includes a pack of literate rats and the rat Piper, Keith. Here the rodent tribe consists of the extravagant entertainer Dangerous Beans, the pack’s spiritual mentor, and the tap-dancing Joe Sug, the traditionally genteel sardine. Which happens to be recognized as the cutest family of rats since Ratatouille. Like the best of children’s cinema out there, The Amazing Maurice moves beneath its surface whimsy to impart important life lessons of tolerance and fairness. Here even death gets some exposure. The morals are packed in a bit more tightly than in the battering ram of Sky Cinema’s earlier effort, Paws of Fury. Although it does share a somewhat nostalgic animation.
