Storyline
“Troll 2022” is ultimately what Troll, a recently released monster movie in Norwegian, fails to overcome. Roar Uthaug’s 2015 movie The Wave, a really entertaining disaster film in which a tidal wave crashes through the fjords, was sufficient to get him hired for the subpar Tomb Raider reboot in 2019. He has returned to his home country with a film that falls somewhere between those two in terms of quality, but unfortunately, it is much more Tomb Raider than Wave and is rife with worn-out clichés. With them, you can adjust your watch. It’s a shame because it would be a fantastic idea for a troll the size of a city building, who has been hiding out for centuries as a mountain, to awaken and wreak havoc in Lillehammer and Oslo. The elements of Hollywood that you enjoy should be present, but not the elements that make you cringe. The troll gets far too much of the latter and not nearly enough of the former. When something much more exciting requires Nora Tidemann’s expertise, she is busy digging up dinosaur bones. The government has built a tunnel through a mountain despite protesters’ picketing, but the mountain isn’t entirely made of mountains.
