Storyline
Billingsley, who plays the adult Ralphie Parker in “A Christmas Story Christmas,” is still a likable performer, but he has lost all traces of the rascally BB-gun excitement. He now reminds me of a melancholy Rick Moranis crossed with the late John Chancellor of NBC News. The new film, which is set in 1973, is about Ralph trying to provide his family—his wife, Sandy, and two children, Mark and Julie—the same kind of distinctly traditional Christmas that his own father gave him. An ambitious novelist named Ralph has taken a year off from the workforce to pursue his dream of becoming a published author. Nearly every publisher in his hometown of Chicago has rejected his sci-fi doorstop “Neptune’s Oblivion,” which he wrote. He later learns that the Old Man has passed away, though. Ralph takes his family to Hohman, Indiana, where they will spend Christmas in the same mustard-yellow Cleveland Street house where the events of “A Christmas Story” took place, in order to console his mother.
